“Enter by the narrow gate;for wide is the gate and broad is the waythat leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.Because narrow is the gateand difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”Matthew 7:13-14
In these verses the Lord Jesus instructs us to enter bythe narrow gate. In our Christian life we will often facetwo gates, one narrow and one wide.
He tells us that the wide gate and the broad way leadsto destruction and many people take this path. If weknow it leads to destruction, then why do we still takeit? The answer is, it’s easy, comfortable, more conve-nient, less hassle; there’s less personal cost involved. The way that leads to life is narrow and difficult. Lessconvenient, more hassle, more personal cost. Our fam-ily and friends may reject us, we may have to turn away“better” career choices, our reputation in the worldmay suffer, we may not be able to do things we wantto do or enjoy, we may even be hurt and attacked.
Which way do we want to take? The difficult way lead-ing to life or the broad way leading to destruction? Asthe Lord says, most people will take the broad way. Areyou going to follow the majority?
Don’t think as a Christian we won’t go into destruction. We don’t lose our salvation, we won’t be condemned toan eternity in the Lake of Fire, but there is a judgmentfor Christians who take the broad way.
We’ll consider this for a moment with the Bible to showyou that I’m not making this up! These verses are notdirected at non-Christians but to Christians!
In our Christian life if we want to take the way thatleads to life and we want to receive the reward thenthere is a price to pay. We must obey the Lord even if itcontradicts our own feelings and preferences.
As you’re reading this, you might be think-ing you’ve never heard something like this before. Thereason is that many Christians take the broad way bypreferring to speak about and listening to comfortingwords about grace and love. It’s like eating sweet treats. Most people don’t want to talk about judgment and thecost involved in the Christian life. The Word of God hasbeen watered down. But we are living in a special age,we are very close to the return of Christ and He’s tryingto warn us that we need to make changes, take ourChristian life seriously, and wake up to know the truth. It won’t be easy but if we take this narrow way we willearn the reward. If we take the broad easy way with themajority of Christians we will fall into destruction andjudgment. Don’t say “everybody’s doing this so it mustbe right” and “nobody is saying what you’re saying soyou must be wrong”. If you haven’t noticed, in manyexamples in the Bible, the majority is usually not right so if you find yourself going along with the majoritythen you should stop and think about whether you’reon the right path (Num 14:30; Jud 7:7; Jn 6:60; Matt22:14).
